RESOLEABLE SOCKS

ReSoleAble Socks

For the past few years, I have been knitting socks rather obsessively. I have been dutifully using reinforced yarn for the heels and toes, only to find that I don’t wear out my socks there. I wear out the ball of the foot and underneath the heel, past the reinforcing yarn in the “round and round” part of the foot. I tried darning and found that not only don’t I enjoy doing it, it is often lumpy for the first dozen wearings or so. I’ve often been intrigued by Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Moccasin Socks and thought I would like to try something like that, but with a more conventional construction. This pattern is what I came up with to solve my sock problems.

The pattern contains complete, line by line instructions for knitting the socks pictured, as well as suggestions for making other patterns re-sole-able and instructions for repairing and re-sole-ing your socks. Each step is illustrated with a photograph.
